The Celebration of the Passion of the Lord

The second day of the Triduum begins in silence, continuing from last evening's celebration of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper.

This is the darkest and brightest hour of our Lord Jesus Christ, God made man. In total obedience to His Father, He was humiliated and convicted of blasphemy, was punished and convicted to die, carried His own cross of destruction and death, was nailed upon this cross, and died on this cross: darkness came over the land. The suffering, death and burial of Jesus are indeed the revelation of God's love and glory. Today, we walk with Christ into His death, not for death and destruction, but for salvation, redemption and new life.

Truly, this cross is a sign of Jesus' triumph over death, and we glory in his triumph, for we cannot separate passion and death from resurrection. The vestments worn today are red, signifying the blood that was sacrificed, and the victory of the cross.

The liturgy today consists of three parts:

the readings of Scripture, the veneration of the cross, and Holy Communion.
